Yes, as long as all the eligible species occur in your state too. The Challenge Host (CH) should be aware of any potential differences. Geographic differences in the size a species may grow can make fishing over large areas unfair. For example, largemouth bass in Florida average greater length than in Maine.
Can the challenge participants put in some money for a prize pool?
We can't control what participants do outside of the website. You are on your own.
I need to add a fish to my Eligible Species List, but I can't find it - what do I do ?
We are constantly adding fish species to our database. If you need a fish added, please send us the common name, scientific name and any other names it is known by.
How are Species Points determined ?
Each species is worth 100 points regardless of it's size. As soon as a second (or more) particpant records the same species, an average length is determined. This average length is now the 100 point size. Fish below the average receive less points, while those above receive more points. This enables all species to be rated under the same formula.
I want to fish for a species that is not on the eligible list, can I ?
Yes but it won;t count. The Challenge Host (CH) is the one who chooses the fish list. If you want one added, speak to the CH. If it is not on the CH's list of available fish, we can add it to our database.
What if I catch a fish species that is not on the species list ?
Nothing. It cannot be recorded. It's as if you never caught it. Sorry, but whine to your Challenge Director.
Can I just join an existing Challenge?
No, you can either start your own, or you have to be invited by someone else. You can't invite yourself - that's rude. Some Challenges maybe open to anyone.
What changes can be made to a challenge ?
Pretty much anything, but only up until the start time. After that, the parameters are locked down.
What if people cheat?
There is no fool-proof way to stop someone cheating. The more rules a CH establishes, the more chances there are for someone to break them. This is essentially a game based on honesty. Also, if you are invited, you are being trusted to be honest. Violate that trust and you will probably not have many invites coming your way in the future. Don't get blacklisted for cheating.
For the most part, the challenge participants know each other and can conduct themselves in a sportsmanlike manner. If the CH says this challenge is for fly fishing only, then they should invite people they know will adhere to that rule.
How long can the challenge run for ?
The minimum time is one day. You can run one for a weekend, or for the whole year if you wish. All challenges start at midnight and end at midnight.
Can I participate in more than one challenge at a time?
Absolutely. The web site will track all your events for you. Just be sure to upload photos and record your catches to the correct challenge !
Can I submit one fish to multiple challenges ?
As long as the challenges are still open and your fish is on the eligible list, you can submit it to as many challenges as you wish. You would be silly not too.
What if I catch a bigger fish than one I already submitted ?
Submit the bigger one. Only your largest of each fish species wil be used for scoring. When you upload a fish photo it overwrites any previous photos for that species. At the end of the challenge, you will only have one photo submitted for each species.
What happens if one of my photos is disqualified?
This should be a last resort, and your CD should contact you first. If it is removed, it will be as if you never caught that species at all. SO MAKE SURE YOUR PHOTOS ARE GOOD !!! You may be asked to submit the original photograph of the fish, so keep it available.
We use metric measurements, how do we report fish lengths ?
When you start a challenge, you select the meaurement type.
How accurate must the measurements be?
Round up to the nearest 1 cm or 1/2 inch, whichever system you are using.
How do I record my catches?
From your account page, click on "My Georec Challenges" and select the one you are recording a fish for. At the top right of the page is option to record your catch and upload the photograph. If the challenge has ended you will not be able to record anything.
